Pregnancy Related Hypertension and Diabetes: Therapeutic Management
Overview:
This module overviews the population health impact of pregnancy related hypertension and diabetes in the District of Columbia and across the country. The course reviews the risk factors, diagnostic criteria, management, and treatment of these conditions so that health professionals can make appropriate treatment recommendations and referrals. This module will be a lecture style format with integrated questions throughout. It will be approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes in length and provide 1.5 hours of CME.
Target Audience
This activity is intended for physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals.
Learning Objectives
1. Recognize and properly diagnose pregnancies complicated by chronic hypertension, gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, and gestational diabetes
2. Manage or describe the management of and make appropriate referrals for pregnancies complicated by chronic hypertension, gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, hypertensive emergencies, and gestational diabetes
3. Determine the first line options for the treatment of hypertension in pregnancy and gestational diabetes
4. Recognize antihypertensive and diabetes medications to be avoided during pregnancy
5. Counsel patients about the complications and risks associated with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and gestational diabetes and the appropriate administration of medications
Rita Driggers, MD:
Dr. Rita Driggers attended medical school at the University of Tennessee followed by residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Uniformed Services Residency at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD.
She then completed fellowship training in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD, which was followed by 14 years of service in the U.S. Navy. During the majority of her time in the Navy she was stationed at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where she served as Chief of Obstetrics and Director of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Division as well as Associate Residency Program Director.
Upon leaving the Navy, Dr. Driggers joined the faculty at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC, serving as the Program Director of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship and Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Georgetown University School of Medicine.
Dr. Driggers is currently Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the Medical Director of Maternal Fetal Medicine at Johns Hopkins Sibley Memorial Hospital. In her spare time, Dr. Driggers serves as an American Board of Obstetrician and Gynecologists (ABOG) General Oral Board Examiner and as a member of several committees of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG).

Elaine Yip, PharmD, BCPS:
Elaine Yip, PharmD, BCPS, is a Primary Care Clinical Pharmacy Specialist at Kaiser Permanente, Largo, MD. She received her Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from the University of Maryland and then completed her PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Residency with Kaiser Permanente Mid-Atlantic States. In her current role, Dr. Yip focuses on drug utilization and medication therapy management.

Tara Bastawrous, PharmD, BCPS, BC-ADM:
Dr. Bastawrous is a primary care clinical pharmacist specialist at Camp Springs, for the Kaiser Permanente Mid-Atlantic States (KPMAS) region. Dr. Bastawrous joined KPMAS in 2015 as pharmacy practice resident, and has continued as a primary care clinical pharmacist as well as residency and student preceptor. Dr. Bastawrous attended the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy.
