Ethics in Healthcare: Exploring Bioethics, Clinical Ethics, and Health Equity
Overview:
Dr. Sotomayor, Chief of the Clinical Ethics Consultation service of the Pellegrino Center for Clinical Bioethics, navigates learners through the complex ethical dilemmas that face healthcare practitioners by reinforcing the foundational concepts of clinical bioethics, primarily the four principles, and educating the learner on how to apply these foundational concepts to the pressing ethical issues related to health equity and prescribing and access to medications and treatments.

Physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, social workers, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, dentists, medical students and residents, and healthcare administrators
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, the learner will be able to:
- Apply key concepts of clinical bioethics to clinical practice
- Describe the ethical considerations of social determinants of health and resource allocation
- Explore pressing ethical issues related to health equity and access to healthcare
- Evaluate a case related to access to medications from an ethical perspective

Claudia Ruiz Sotomayor, MD, DBe, HEC-C
Dr. Claudia Ruiz Sotomayor is the Chief of the Clinical Ethics Consultation service of the Pellegrino Center for Clinical Bioethics, a Cura Personalis Fellow, and an Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at Georgetown University Medical Center. She holds a Medical Degree from Universidad Autonoma de Chihuahua, in Chihuahua, Mexico, and a Doctorate in Bioethics from Loyola University in Chicago, Il, USA. Claudia also completed a fellowship in Clinical Bioethics at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX. She has been a Research Scholar for UNESCO Chair in Bioethics and Human Rights since 2012, where she has worked in the area of Multiculturalism, Bioethics and Religion. She is a member of the Theology and Ethics Advisory Council of the Catholic Healthcare Association (CHA) and the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities (ASBH). She is particularly interested in the intersection between values, cultures, religions, and the decision-making process in a healthcare setting.
