Navigating Digital Media, AI & Mental Health

This 1.5 credit asynchronous course equips clinicians with practical, evidence-based strategies to assess and address the health impacts of screen time, social media, and AI use across the lifespan. The course focuses on identifying patients at risk, understanding mental and physical health implications, and applying effective counseling, intervention, and referral approaches, with consideration for emerging topics including AI for therapy and companionship.

Pharmacists, nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals committed to improving health outcomes.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify patterns of screen time, social media, and AI use that place patients at increased mental, physical, or social risk. 
  2. Assess the impact of digital media exposure on sleep, mood, behavior, physical health, and functioning across the lifespan. 
  3. Implement evidence-based counseling strategies for patients and families on healthy screen use, social media boundaries, and safe AI engagement. 
  4. Demonstrate appropriate referral strategies for patients experiencing adverse effects related to digital media or AI use. 
  5. Differentiate between beneficial uses of AI tools for patients and situations where AI use may be unsafe, insufficient, or clinically inappropriate, and guide patients toward appropriate care. 
  6. Integrate community and family-based approaches to promote digital safety, reduce harm, and support overall well-being.

 Molly O’Shea, MD

Molly O'Shea, MD completed her undergraduate and medical education at the University of Michigan and her pediatric residency at Children's Hospital of Michigan in Detroit. She has since built a career as both a practicing pediatrician and independent practice owner. Her practices, Birmingham Pediatrics and Campground Pediatrics, offer integrated behavioral health services to families throughout southeast Michigan.

Dr. O'Shea has been an active contributor to the American Academy of Pediatrics throughout her career, serving as a journal editor, national CME planner, and faculty member. She is currently one of the Academy's official spokespeople, authoring op-eds and conducting media interviews on topics including artificial intelligence, social media, and the broader digital ecosystem as they relate to child health and development, as well as suicide prevention. As an Ambassador for the AAP Center of Excellence on Social Media and Youth Mental Health, Dr. O'Shea translates research and clinical guidance into accessible information for parents, educators, pediatricians, and media outlets — with a focus on the impact of social media on youth mental health and practical strategies for keeping children safe in the digital age.

Dr. Bianca Nguyen

Dr. Bianca Nguyen is a community psychiatrist dedicated to social justice and improving access and quality of behavioral health care through partnership, education, and innovation. She is currently the Medical Director of Coordinated Behavioral Care, Inc. (CBC), a provider-led not-for-profit organized as a lead Health Home and Independent Practice Association (IPA), which leverages a network of 70+ community-based health and human services agencies serving high-need, low-income New Yorkers.  In addition to this role, she serves as CCBHC (Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic) Medical Director for Samaritan Daytop Village, and is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Columbia University.
